The Fidelity Multi Asset Income fund aims to generate a natural and sustainable income by investing in a broad range of assets to help diversify risk and preserve investors’ capital. This is achieved mainly through investment in other Fidelity funds.
The strategy targets a sustainable yield of 4% to 6% a year , over a five-to-seven-year timeframe. The fund sits in the Investment Association’s 0-35% Shares sector, meaning it will hold a maximum of 35% in equities, which are higher risk investments. It has ongoing charges of 0.89%, which is reasonable for a fund-of-funds approach.
Eugene Philalithis, who joined Fidelity in 2007, is the lead portfolio manager of Fidelity’s Multi Asset Income funds range, supported by co-managers George Efstathopoulos and Chris Forgan. The managers draw on research provided by the broader team, which is made up of more than 90 investment professionals located across the world.
The fund’s investment process seeks to blend uncorrelated sources of both income and returns, while paying significant attention to risk management. This leads to a diversified portfolio consisting of different asset classes and underlying strategies.
Its assets can be broken down into three broader categories depending on their return, yield and risk specifics. These are: defensive assets that include investment grade corporate bonds and cash (currently around 40% of the overall portfolio), high yield and local emerging markets debt (also around 40% of the fund), and growth assets consisting of equities and real assets (around 20% of the fund).
