The team behind Seraphim Space Investment Trust Ord (LSE:SSIT) has launched an exchange-traded fund (ETF) focused on “publicly listed companies at the forefront of the new space economy”.

The Seraphim New Space ETF Acc Shr Cl USD GBP (LSE:SERA), which goes under the ticker of SERA, tracks an index built by Seraphim that will focus on companies in the areas of communications, connectivity, earth observation, launch, defence, intelligence and space-enabled technologies.
Investors are already not short of choice when it comes to space ETFs, with VanEck Space Innovators ETF A USD Acc GBP (LSE:JEDG), iShares Space Technologies ETF USD Acc GBP (LSE:STRR) and the WisdomTree Space Economy ETF USD Acc GBP (LSE:WSPG) among the names available.
The Seraphim offering is also far from cheap, with a yearly fee of 0.75%. The other names mentioned all charge either 0.5% or 0.55%.
However, Seraphim argued that it had an edge, claiming: “Unlike many existing space-themed funds, which are heavily weighted towards traditional aerospace and defence companies, the ETF focuses on businesses whose growth is directly linked to the commercialisation of space and the expansion of the new space economy”.
The Seraphim index begins with a universe of stocks in the “space tech” world, with a focus on liquid US and European names.
They are then judged on criteria such as business quality, liquidity, new space revenue exposure, technology leadership and their growth trajectory.

Seraphim also notes that it can apply a “conviction-based” approach rather than establishing position sizes based on a company’s market capitalisation.
“Companies are assigned to tiers based on their overall assessment and weighted accordingly, providing greater exposure to businesses that Seraphim believes are best positioned to benefit from long-term structural growth,” the firm said.
Allocations can change as the ETF gets established, but a holdings list from the start of September included Seraphim Space itself, as well as Space Exploration Technologies Corp Class A (NASDAQ:SPCX), Voyager Technologies Inc Class A (NYSE:VOYG), SSIT holding Hawkeye 360 Inc (NYSE:HAWK), Redwire Corp (NYSE:RDW), AST SpaceMobile Inc Ordinary Shares - Class A (NASDAQ:ASTS) and BlackSky Technology Inc Class A (NYSE:BKSY).
As we have noted before, thematic ETFs can have overlap, and it’s worth asking just how different this offering is from the competition.
