ii round-up:
Reenergised Citigroup Inc (NYSE:C) reported its highest third-quarter revenue in a decade, driven by gains for all divisions with the exception of US consumer cards.
Three-month revenue to late September climbed 8% to $23.85 billion, pushing adjusted earnings up 53% to $2.85 per share. Citi flagged a slight dip in expected returns on capital in the current fourth quarter due to seasonal factors, although with growth in annual interest income now expected at a 6% minimum, up from a previous 5-6%.
Shares in the S&P 500 bank fell 5% in post results US trading having come into these latest numbers up by more than a third over the last year. Rival JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) has gained close to a tenth during that time. The S&P 500 index is up around 17% over the last year.
Citi has been implementing an efficiency improvement programme which includes a move from two giant divisions to five in order to spotlight areas of growth as well as reducing management layers and costs.
Sales at the group’s Services division, including custody and administration, climbed 15% to $6.6 billion. Revenues for the Wealth business also rose 15% to $3.27 billion, aided by US stock markets at or near record highs.
Sales at the Markets business, including equity and bond trading, climbed 6% to $6.1 billion. Growth in equity sales slowed to 14% from 45% in the prior second quarter. Bond revenue climbed 4%.
Banking revenues improved 6% to $1.74 billion while US Consumer Cards was flat at $4.6 billion.
Share buybacks total $13.3 billion year-to-date. A third-quarter dividend of $0.67 per share is up 12% from the second-quarter.
Broker Morgan Stanley reiterated its ‘overweight’ stance on the shares post the results. Fourth-quarter numbers are due 14 January.
ii view:
Citigroup is today focused on being a banking partner for institutions with cross-border needs, a global leader in wealth management and a valued personal bank in the US.
Markets, Services and US Personal Banking each generated around a quarter of revenues in 2025, with the balance split relatively evenly between Banking, Wealth and US Consumer Cards. Geographically, North America accounted for half of sales, with the UK at close to a tenth, and the rest of the world the balance.
For investors, investment costs to modernise areas such as systems and infrastructure are expected to prove a drag on efficiency in 2026. A share price-to-net asset value comfortably above the three-year average may suggest the shares are not obviously cheap. A recent regulatory fine of $1.2 billion for rival Bank of America Corp (NYSE:BAC) regarding money laundering violations is not to be ignored, while previous overseas business sales as part of Citi’s transformation programme have reduced geographical diversification.

More favourably, management’s second-stage efficiency drive is now focused on areas including modernising infrastructure and enhancing data. Diversity across its operations persists despite a more focused strategy. A capital cushion, or CET1 ratio of 12.8% is 1.2% above the regulatory requirement, while a focus on shareholder returns leaves the shares on a forecast dividend yield of around 2%.
On balance, and while risks remain, an ongoing drive to enhance efficiency and a consensus analyst fair value estimate above $150 per share offer room for optimism.
Positives:
- Business transformation
- Diversity of operations
Negatives:
- Uncertain economic outlook
- Reduced geographical diversity
