Nvidia/Hugging Face

NVIDIA Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA) is the most-bought tech stock on the ii platform so far this week.

It has announced plans to acquire open-source AI platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion (£9.55 billion). Dubbed the “GitHub of AI”, Hugging Face will strengthen Nvidia’s foothold in the AI ecosystem and provide the tech giant with access to key AI developers.

According to Nvidia, Hugging Face is used by more than 18 million developers, researchers, and creators to share more than three million models, 500,000 datasets and one million applications. More than 200,000 companies use the platform to pursue their AI goals. Nvidia said “together, we will scale Hugging Face’s platform, strengthen its infrastructure and expand access to AI for developers and institutions worldwide”, and described the company as “remarkable” and “a vibrant home for the open model developer community”.

This is Nvidia’s biggest acquisition so far, surpassing its purchase of networking technology company Mellanox for $6.9 billion in 2020. The Hugging Face deal might face regulatory hurdles but could close in 2027 subject to approvals.

Broadcom

Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ:AVGO) is among the most popular tech stocks on the ii platform so far this week. It reported fiscal third-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $3.32 on revenue of $29.59 billion, both ahead of expectations thanks to soaring AI chip sales which hit $16.7 billion.

It also issued strong guidance for next year, forecasting fiscal 2027 AI chip revenue of $115 billion, up from $100 billion and $230 billion in fiscal 2028. However, shares fell after its fiscal fourth-quarter revenue guidance hit $34.8 billion, slightly below expectations for $35.03 billion.

Uber Technologies

Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE:UBER) announced plans to cut roughly 10% of its workforce, equivalent to around 3,300 jobs as it looks to cut costs and simplify the business. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said this decision is to make Uber “simpler and faster, and create more capacity to invest”. He also said that Uber has reduced the number of employees who sit seven-plus layers from the CEO by 20% and the number of micro-teams by nearly 50% to create a simpler org chart.

Investors responded positively to the announcement, with shares rallying almost 2% on Wednesday, helping to offset some of this year’s decline. Uber has suffered this year amid concerns about disruption to its ride hailing business from robotaxis.

Shares are down by more than 6% so far this year and are down 18% over the past 12 months. According to Refinitiv, there is a consensus buy recommendation on Uber with an average price target of $102.29, representing 32% upside from the current share price.

Week Ahead

Apple new iPhone launch event

Wednesday is a big day for Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) and new CEO John Ternis – the company’s annual September launch event. Investors are hoping for a new foldable smartphone that could represent a major new product category and revenue stream to compete with Samsung Electronics Co Ltd DR (LSE:SMSN)’s existing Galaxy Z Flip phone series.

Apple is also expected to launch a new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max as it looks to try to accelerate the customer upgrade cycle and charge higher prices to offset the drastic jump in global memory chip costs.

Ternus has been at the helm of Apple since 1 September, having replaced Tim Cook, who enjoyed an incredibly successful 15-year reign as CEO. Ternus’ background in engineering makes him particularly suited to developing new, innovative hardware products.

Apple shares are up 20% so far this year, outperforming the Nasdaq 100 and the S&P 500. According to Refinitiv, analysts are optimistic towards the stock with a consensus buy recommendation on the stock. Apple is one of the most-bought tech stocks on the ii platform so far this week.
